Everyone’s constantly on the lookout for the ‘next big thing’ in social media, and Twitter’s CEO Dick Costolo believes the micro-blogging site has found it in the form of social video sharing. When Twitter bought mobile social video sharing app, Vine, in 2012, Costolo explained the move saying: “When Facebook bought Instagram, I said we’re not going to do what those other guys did. We’re looking for the next thing. We all agreed that this is the next thing down the road.”

The majority of respondents in a Hiring Bounty job survey cited a referral as being the most effective method of finding a job. 25% still relied on traditional print advertisements, closely followed by online job portals. As many as one in 10 applicants have found their current position through social media, with the preferred method being a vacancy advertised by a company on its Facebook page.

Journalists across the globe are using social media in their daily working life and feel that it is complimentary to traditional media rather than a threat. Of those surveyed, 87% view social media as being complimentary to traditional journalism as opposed to a threat. Research by global public relations group ECCO International found that day-to-day journalists are undertaking background research, rapid information gathering and opinion mining using social media on a daily basis.
