Spare a thought this festive season for all the journalists imprisoned without trial around the world, mostly for alleged sedition or “plotting” against the State. More than half are online journalists and more than a third are freelancers. Those incarcerated for doing their jobs reached record highs in 2012, with a total of 232 individuals behind bars. Top five worst offending countries: Turkey (49), Iran (45), China (32), Eritrea (28) and Syria (15). This is the worst since 1996 when 185 journalists were then counted in prison. None of the journalists in jail in any of the five countries listed have been publically charged with a crime or brought before court.
